Ways to give

Choose the gift that fits your life.

Every planned gift, whatever its size or form, offers the greatest potential to sustain Bishop Museum into the future. As Hawaiʻi’s State Museum of Natural and Cultural History, we are honored to preserve and protect Hawaiʻi’s rich cultural and natural legacy. We invite you to partner with us as we steward the environment and culture of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. Here are the most common ways our members give.

01

A gift in your will or trust

The simplest legacy gift: a bequest provision in your will or revocable living trust — a specific amount, a percentage, or what remains after other gifts. Revocable at any time, no cost today.

02

Beneficiary designation

Name Bishop Museum on an IRA, 401(k), life insurance policy, or donor-advised fund. Often the most tax-efficient asset to leave to charity.

03

Appreciated securities

Give stock you’ve held for longer than a year. You avoid capital gains tax and may deduct the full market value. Tell us what you’d like to give and we’ll send you transfer instructions.

04

IRA qualified charitable distribution

If you’re 70½ or older, you can give up to $111,000 a year (2026 limit) directly from your IRA. The gift counts toward fulfilling the required minimum distribution (RMD) and is excludable from your taxable income.

05

Gifts that pay you income

  • Charitable Gift Annuities — irrevocable gifts to Bishop Museum in exchange for a fixed annual amount (annuity) to you or another individual (annuitants).
  • Charitable Remainder Trust — irrevocable transfer of assets to a donor-designated trustee. The trustee pays income to the donor and/or other beneficiaries for their lifetime or a specific term. The remainder of the trust benefits Bishop Museum.
